Stretch Mark and Cellulite Treatment Q & A

Ventura Medical Aesthetics

What causes stretch marks?

Stretch marks appear when your skin must stretch to keep up with the size of your body. Stretch marks often occur during growth spurts in adolescents, with pregnancy, and after weight gain.

Manifesting as bands or lines on your skin, stretch marks are scars caused by your skin stretching and may look red, blue, white, or purple. They may have a different texture or sink below the skin.

Although they can appear anywhere, stretch marks typically form on the:

  • Abdomen
  • Breasts
  • Thighs
  • Buttocks
  • Upper arms

Although stretch marks never go away, many of them fade with time.

What is cellulite?

Cellulite forms on the thighs, hips, and buttocks and appears like bumpy, dimpled flesh. Cellulite results when cords of fibrous tissue attach to the underside of your skin and press against your fat cells. This creates lines and puckers in the fat, which transfers through the skin.

It’s not clear why some people develop cellulite and others don’t.

What are the options for stretch mark and cellulite treatment?

While many stretch marks fade over time, not all do, and some still remain prevalent. At Ventura Medical Aesthetics, Dr. Slater offers pain-free laser treatments for stretch marks and cellulite.

If your stretch marks are relatively new, Dr. Slater may recommend a prescription cream or ointment containing tretinoin, which can fade stretch marks that are pink or red.

When you need more than a cream to reduce the appearance of stretch marks and cellulite, Dr. Slater and her team often recommend a laser treatment with Icon. This non-ablative laser uses fractional energy to break up the scar tissue that causes stretch marks, as well as the fibers that lead to cellulite.

What happens during a laser treatment for stretch marks or cellulite?

Upon arriving at Ventura Medical Aesthetics for your Icon laser treatment, one of the professional team members preps your treatment area. Once the area’s ready, they use a handheld device to administer the fractional laser energy into your skin, where it immediately affects your scar tissue or fibers.

This energy essentially “explodes” these tissues, fracturing them into small, minuscule pieces that your body naturally processes.

To get optimal results, Dr. Slater may recommend more than one Icon treatment.
