Botox Q & A

What is Botox®?

Botox® is one of the most recognized names in aesthetics for treating facial wrinkles. The injectable works by blocking the signal from the nerve to the muscle, preventing them from moving repetitively, which is what causes the creasing in the first place. Botox is perfectly safe when administered by a professional like Dr. Slater.

Are there risks of Botox?

Botox injections are approved by the FDA for treatment of fine lines and wrinkles. As with most injections, you may notice pain or swelling at the injection site and possible headache or flu-like symptoms. Dr. Slater places your injections precisely, avoiding the risk of serious side effects from misuse.

Should I get Botox?

Anyone ages 18-65 can be a good candidate for Botox, however, you should avoid the treatment if you’re pregnant, breastfeeding, or allergic to cow’s milk. Common skin concerns that can be treated with Botox include:

  • Thinning skin
  • Deep-set wrinkles
  • Heavy brow
  • Heavy eyelids
  • Furrow between brow
  • Lines around mouth

During your appointment with Dr. Slater, you’ll be given information about how Botox can improve the appearance of your lines and wrinkles, and what kind of outcome to expect.

What else does Botox help with?

In addition to fine lines and wrinkles, Botox helps relax other muscles in your face, creating better facial symmetry by lowering a raised eyebrow or the sides of your mouth. You can also reduce a “gummy” smile. If your lip seems too short to cover your gums and teeth when you smile, Botox can lower your lip to cover the area. Excessive sweating is another common complaint that can be addressed with Botox. The injection stops the sweat from being expelled from your body.

What is a Botox appointment like?

The team at Dr. Slater & Ventura Medical Aesthetic welcomes you into your procedure room and ensures you feel comfortable and relaxed. You may be offered a mild, topical anesthetic to reduce discomfort. Dr. Slater or a member of her highly skilled team injects the Botox using a thin needle into your skin or muscle. After she completes your injections, Dr. Slater recommends avoiding rubbing the area for 24 hours. You can return to your normal activities right away.
